康明斯与中国的商业联系始于1975年，时任康明斯董事长埃尔文·米勒（Irwin Miller）先生首次访问北京寻求商业合作。1979年中美建交，中国对外开放伊始，首家康明斯驻华办事处在北京成立。
康明斯从此开始在华进行发动机本地化生产，1981年，重庆发动机厂开始许可证生产康明斯发动机，并在1995年与康明斯联合成立中国合资发动机工厂。
到目前为止，康明斯在华总计设有37家机构，包括26家制造企业，员工13,000多名，生产发动机、发电机组、交流发电机、排放处理系统、涡轮增压系统、燃油系统、控制系统、变速箱、制动技术、车桥技术、滤清系统、氢能制造、存储及燃料电池等产品；18家省级客户支持中心，以及3,000多家康明斯及合资体系授权经销商。
康明斯长期坚持与中国大型企业结成战略联盟，实现共同发展。作为最早来华进行本地化生产的外资柴油机企业，四十多年来，康明斯已经与包括东风汽车、重庆机电、陕汽集团、北汽福田、柳工集团、和江淮汽车在内的中国领先企业组建了六家发动机合资厂，康明斯24个发动机系列中已有19个在中国本地生产。
康明斯是较早在华设立研发中心的外资动力供应商，2006年8月，康明斯与东风公司合作设立的发动机技术研发中心在湖北武汉启用。除针对中国市场量身开发最适合的产品，康明斯中国技术中心也在不断扩大与中国伙伴在研发领域的合作。迄今为止，康明斯在华共有4家研发中心，为康明斯东亚研发中心，无锡涡轮增压技术中心、重庆大马力技术中心，以及位于上海的氢能研发中心也。
2023年康明斯在华销售额（含合资公司）69亿美元，中国区已经成为康明斯全球规模最大、增长最快的海外市场之一。
历经近50年的发展，康明斯已经成为中国动力产业的有机组成部分，通过合资、独资生产和技术转让，为中国发动机产业的现代化作出了自己的贡献。
Cummins' ties to China dates back to 1975 when former Chairman J. Irwin Miller visited China for business opportunities. Cummins' first office was established in Beijing in 1979 shortly after China’s opening-up and reform.
Since then, Cummins began to play an important role in the China engine industry. In 1981, Cummins signed its first license agreement with the China National Heavy-Duty Truck Corporation (CNHTC), and then formed its earliest joint venture with CNHTC in 1995.
Now, Cummins operates 37 facilities in China, including 26 manufacturing bases producing engines, power generation sets, alternators, emission solutions, turbochargers, fuel systems, control system, ATM, brake system, axle, filters, hydrogen generation, storage and fuel cell products. The company has more than 13,000 employees, 18 provincial Customer Service Hubs and over 3000+ Cummins wholly owned and JV authorized dealers.
Cummins partners with China’s leading enterprises for mutual development and success. Cummins established 6 joint ventures with local companies including Dongfeng Motor, CQME, Shaanqi Group, Beiqi Foton, Liugong, and Jianghuai Motors. There are 19 of 24 Cummins engine series been produced in China.
In August 2006, the East Asia Research and Development Center was jointly established by Cummins and Dongfeng in Wuhan, Hubei. This is the first R&D center Cummins built in China and it designs and develops products to local customer needs. Up to date, Cummins has established four R&D centers in China, including East Asia R&D Center in Wuhan, Turbo Technology Center in Wuxi, High-Horsepower Technical Center in Chongqing, and a Hydrogen Technology Center in Shanghai.
In 2023, Cummins sales revenue in China (including JV) achieved $6.9 billion. China has become one of the biggest and fastest growing overseas market for Cummins.
After nearly 50 years of development, Cummins grew into an integrated part in China’s power segment. Through the production in joint ventures and wholly-owned enterprises as well as imports of technologies, Cummins makes its unique contribution to advancing power technologies and upgrading China’s engine industry.
